You have your documents gathered and are ready to file, when do you need to do this by? The deadline to file your taxes is generally April 15th. If the 15th falls on a weekend or federal holiday then the tax deadline is moved to the next business day.
What if I'm not ready to file by the 15th?
If you believe you will not be able to complete and file your return by April 15, then you can request an extension by filing Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. IMPORTANT: This is an extension only to file your return. It does not give you an extension to pay any tax you may owe.
Are there any other exceptions to the due date?
There are some other exceptions to the April 15th due date.
Military: If you are a military service member serving in a combat zone, you are automatically granted an extension to file your tax return. You have at least 180 days after you leave the designated combat zone to file and pay your taxes.
Civilian Contractor: If you are a civilian contractor working with the Department of Defense in a designated combat zone, you qualify under the same exception as active service members. However, you will need to notify the IRS directly of your qualifying status.
Disaster Relief: If you live in or your tax records are stored in a federally declared disaster area you could qualify for a special extension to file your taxes. For more information on IRS disaster assistance and emergency relief click here.
Living Outside the US: If you are a US citizen living and working outside the United States then you may qualify for an automatic 2-month extension to file and pay your taxes. If you believe you qualify for this extension, contact your tax professional to learn more.
